Ladies That Train

21/11/2013 17:00

Ladies that train...

A large part of what I do on a daily basis is all about encouraging women to start strength

training, I truly believe that by becoming capable at using their own body weight and lifting

heavy, women can not only achieve their desired look but can also feel fantastic!

Strength training prompts ladies to set goals and when those have been reached there's

always a heavier weight to lift...personally I feel there's only so long you can run on a

treadmill for before boredom strikes. Why would anyone want to run continuously and

never actually go anywhere...?

But what is strength training?

Strength is defined as the ability to generate force against physical objects and to carry out

work against resistance. Strength training is the use of resistance to induce muscular

contraction to build strength and anaerobic endurance.

In our quest to make women stronger we hear of all sorts of reasons as to why girls should

not partake in any form of training with weights. These range from "but I don't want to look

like the hulk" to "weights are intimidating and I don't know what to do with them".

Women naturally have less of the hormones required for the type of muscle hypertrophy

that will turn you into the hulk...if developing huge muscles was as easy as pressing a few

weights above your head a few times a week and doing a few squats we'd all be body

builders. The reality is that what you're more likely to achieve is a toned sculpted look

rather than bulging biceps (think more she-ra than he-man)!

As the amount of lean muscle a person has increases so does their basal metabolic rate

(BMR). Put simply your BMR is the amount of energy you expend whilst at rest. The higher

your BMR the more calories you're burning whilst doing nothing. Sounds like a good deal

to me!!

Other advantages include a decreased risk of osteoporosis as women age, an increase in

self confidence and the use of training as an awesome stress reliever.

The Suzinator runs Wonder Woman Workshops once a month in Greenwich Park, a group

of 20 ladies all come together to train hard, lift heavy and be pushed physically and

mentally throughout the 3 hours. Women are coached through a variety of different

exercises designed to develop strength and get them looking awesome.

A large part of Wonder Women focuses on body weight movements pushing ladies to

become capable at using their own body weight before adding additional weights into the

equation. Women then walk away from the workshop having learnt basic fundamental

moves that they can then incorporate into their own training.

Wonder Woman workshops focus on empowering ladies through strength training and

bringing together a group of likeminded people to push each other to achieve their goals.
